Rocket Bomber - article - manga - Ranking New Releases and Preorders - Week of 21 July

I used to post a new release list, nominally every week and in point of fact at least 2 (and often 3) weeks a month.

I also used to spend less than 15 hours a week compiling data for an online manga ranking that is of questionable accuracy, usefulness, or popularity. (I like it. YMMV)

Anyway… given the timesuck that is the charts, the last thing I really want to do each week is spend another two hours on data entry for information that is readily available elsewhere. Oh, sure, I use to post non-fiction titles in some not-quite-related but cool categories like film studies, art, art technique, and general fan culture — but that was typically my only contribution and addition to what boils down to the weekly Diamond Shipping List.

(And I can do a quarterly or perhaps even monthly post on new academic titles — I’d like to do the same for science fiction. RocketBomber is only a few weeks old yet; give me time, and I’ll find a place for both.)

In the meantime, I do have this great hulkin’ database that does get updated on a weekly basis. It’s kind of like taking the giant robot through the drive-thru to pick up a burger, but if one happens to own a giant robot, why not?

Before I do a pull from the listings for a pseudo-new-release post, let’s just cover the objections:

1. It’s not complete.

Yep. Like I said: that data is available elsewhere.

2. You only track Publication Date by month, not by week; doesn’t that mean the post in week 4 will have quite a few more titles in it than week 1?

Yep. But: I don’t see that as a problem, and I’m cut’n‘pasting ‘em so it won’t take any more of my time — it certainly isn’t the same sort of drag as typing in all the Tokyopop and Viz titles used to be. (…which also resulted in a glut of titles toward the end of the month, coincidentally enough)

3. You’re posting online pre-orders as well. Does this mean that you intend to post the weekly online sales ranking for, say, Yotsuba&! vol 6 — a book that isn’t even out yet and with no scheduled release date — week in and week out until ADV finally manages to release it?

Yes.

4. New Releases typically come out on Tuesday (at bookstores) or Wednesday (at comic shops, as we all know). When are you going to post your new release rankings?

I’ll flip that around: when would you like them?

My database gets updated continuously, but the cycle is set for finished reports on Sunday afternoons (which collect the online sales rankings for the previous two weeks). I could post this on Monday mornings, with the rest of the charts, or the Friday of the week before, or Saturday nights, or whenever. The spreadsheet doesn’t care.

Unless someone would care to comment, I’ll pull this data from the charts weekly on Tuesday evenings… much like this Tuesday Evening, in fact. And since we’re quite a bit closer to the end of the month than the beginning, this list will be fairly heavy on the July ’08 releases.
