My Data is Your Data: '08 Summer Manga Rankings

in the raw:
One may download the spreadsheet in convenient OpenOffice format — you really should switch — or in clunky, bloated MS Excel format

or read the whole list (volume rankings) in plain text.

The file is native to OpenOffice, so if it is doing something wonky in Excel I blame Microsoft. (should be fine, tho.)

Trivia, factoids, and notes:

  • Currently tracking 4004 individual titles
  • 3894 of which are ranked — that is to say, the volume appeared at least once in source charts over the 14 week period considered.
  • 115 titles appeared only once, and scored a single point.
  • The 4k volumes comprise 1062 ‘series’ — though my series chart includes one-shots, source and reference books, and possibly an undiscovered typo or two (such that one book may have been counted twice.) I’ll try to nail down a more accurate number of series for the Q4 Winter report.
  • selecting a score of 100 as arbitrarily significant, there are 2173 titles that ‘matter’.
  • using a scalar to reduce the score to an easily comprehended 1-10 scale (where most of the back list rates a 0 or 1 and Naruto vol 30 cranks it up to 11 [*guitar riff*] ) we can whittle the list down to 807 titles that ‘matter’.

807 is probably still too many for most folks to care to look at, so I won’t post it [again] — and for those who must know, even all the way down to that 115-way tie for last place, I refer you to the links at the top.

For Simon (who claims ignorance in things math-y) and others who don’t want to get their hands dirty mucking around with numbers, I’ll be breaking this monster down into finely sliced, nicely grilled, and easily digested servings for the next week. Here’s your appetizer:

if I win the lottery, Bradley Schenck will be getting a pile of cash to redesign this site from scratch.

In my head, I sound like Yahtzee (quite a feat, given my inherited U.S.-flat-midwestern-accent.)

where I start my browsing day...

...and one source I trust for reviews, reports, and opinion on manga specifically...

...and where my casual browsing usually ends, past the research for various articles that I have to do each day.

Note: NSFW. Icarus, best described as "the Thinking Man's Porn Manga." Simon does me the undeserved favor of dropping free review copies my way, which I have callously ignored to date. Simon's blog is also a must-read, for a look at the manga industry from a small indy publisher's perspective. Plus, porn.
