'08 Summer Manga Rankings: Shakespeare!

filed under , 20 October 2008, 19:58; byline — Matt Blind

I definitely prefer the Manga Shakespeare books from SelfMadeHero, published stateside by the Amulet imprint of Henry A. Abrams, Inc. SelfMadeHero’s Macbeth, set in a futuristic Tokyo wasteland where everyone is a katana-wielding streetpunk and (not to give anything away here) MacDuff is a four-armed mutant with a sword for each arm — Classic.

The rather weak graphic-novel adaptations from Wiley suffer greatly in comparison. They might have well dubbed them “the comic editions” but manga is Hawt right now and I’m sure that’s why and wherefore they have their current moniker.

Still and all: Manga! Shakespeare!
I want an anthology mag already. (Weekly Shakespeare Jump, anyone?)

  1. This website is amazing. Where do you get all these data?

  2. The online sales estimates are painstakingly assembled by hand by one poor, overworked blogger who got sick of not having the kind of data that Publishers and Retailers enjoy.

Here’s the basic method: Load up Amazon. Look at their manga category. For the top ranked manga, assign Title x (Ecchi Omnimanga Robot vol 69) some number of points (after some trial and error I went with 300 points for number one) and then assign title y (Mystical Shoujo Romance Kingdom vol 8) some number of points — minus one (299 to follow the previous example.

Repeat down through the top 300 titles. Go to the next sales site and repeat the whole process again. Repeat for a total of 9 sites (10 if you count Amazon’s Hourly bestsellers as separate from the category rankings) and check the top sites (Amazon, B&N, Borders) multiple times a week.

It’s a big pain in the ass — but I have to know. I also do it because I care, but no, really, intellectual curiosity burns deep within me and the beer only partially dulls that fire.

The usual chart is just a weekly ranking; last weeks:

but after 13-14 weeks I compile all the raw data to get a quarterly ranking — at least that’s the plan; I’ve only Spring and Summer of ’08 in the can so far.

if I win the lottery, Bradley Schenck will be getting a pile of cash to redesign this site from scratch.

In my head, I sound like Yahtzee (quite a feat, given my inherited U.S.-flat-midwestern-accent.)

where I start my browsing day...

...and one source I trust for reviews, reports, and opinion on manga specifically...

...and where my casual browsing usually ends, past the research for various articles that I have to do each day.

Note: NSFW. Icarus, best described as "the Thinking Man's Porn Manga." Simon does me the undeserved favor of dropping free review copies my way, which I have callously ignored to date. Simon's blog is also a must-read, for a look at the manga industry from a small indy publisher's perspective. Plus, porn.
