All these titles scoring [0.0] at the end of the chart only appeared once, and way down on the regular manga rankings, and so the weighted score (when rounded to a single decimal) seemingly disappears — but it is more than zero, if only just.

What I find interesting is the ghost of World Embryo [wiki], the most recent manga from Daisuke Moriyama (Chrono Crusade) announced as a Dark Horse license in 2008. Past that announcement — and an isbn 9781595823335 — and of course a number of people trying to order it online, which is the only reason I know about it — I have no additional information. So far as I know, this book has never shipped, though it must have progressed fairly far in pre-publication given the number of sites that list it.

Dear Dark Horse: unless a loss of license or some similar back-room business is keeping this book from coming out, you’re losing money. It’s one of your top 20 manga selling online, and it doesn’t even exist yet.

Even a cursory glance at this seemingly random listing shows old favorites (Berserk, Oh My Goddess!) are still selling well as the new volumes ever-so-slowly come out, the new Neon Genesis Evangelion titles are doing fairly well, and the new CLAMP releases (and re-releases) are generating some interest as well.

— I’ll post the full list, by date, below. I’ll point out that the numeric rankings above are Dark-Horse-specific (and draw from 10 weeks of data) while the places ranked in the list below are how each volume performed against all manga, and only for the date listed.

Before I post the eye-glazing list, I’ll give you my analysis. Well, call them observations instead:

• note that all but three volumes of Berserk are ranking — not every volume every week, but vols 1-3 place each and every week posted, so not only are the new volumes selling, additional fans are buying in at the beginning.
• the same can be said of Hellsing, only more so.
• and also of Lone Wolf & Cub, but in this case the early volumes seem to be outselling the later ones: yes, there are more fans picking up this series each and every year. I don’t know if they burn out, or turn to a bookstore/comic shop to finish up, as the middle volumes aren’t selling nearly as well online, and the last volumes place way down on my rankings.
• and as a final example of this trend, Vampire Hunter D: 15 novels and counting. Novels mind you, which should be less interesting (in some ways) than the comics. I’m not sure if D fans even know there is a manga adaptation (published in the US by DMP).
• The Clover and Chobits omnibuses are performing quite well, considering older editions of the books (from Tokyopop) have been out for years already.
• Fans are still buying Ghost in the Shell and Akira, even though Dark Horse lost those licenses – I’ll put forward two theories: 1st, that fans who like the books are are buying the ‘next’ volume not realizing there are two different publishers, or 2nd, that perfectionists don’t like the Kodansha-published versions and are buying whatever Dark Horse stock they can get their hands on. Both may in fact be happening.

How is Yen doing? Is it just one or two big selling titles?

(note, I take requests: follow me @ ProfessorBlind on twitter and start lobbing questions in the general direction of my head)

First, a bit of background on Yen:

Yen Press has Kurt Hassler. The man knows manga, knows bookstores, and knows what can/will sell, and what might sell with the proper push behind it. The very existence of Yen was a kick in the ass to a market segment that sorely needed it, but even before any Yen Press books hit stores, Yen bought up ICEKunion (and picked up editorial director Ju-Youn Lee, now a senior editor at Yen) and along with ICE got a backlist that goes back 5 years.

Yen is part of Hachette’s sci-fi Orbit imprint (shadowing both Del Rey manga and [Macmillan] Tor’s arrangement with Seven Seas) but that’s just corporate org charts; it runs day-to-day as its own shop.

The corporate connection isn’t to be immediately discounted, though. Hachette got behind Yen and actually published an anthology magazine for three years, from Aug. 2008 to July 2010. Yen Plus is now a “digital magazine” (fancy website with a subscription model) but Hachette gets full credit for even trying to compete with Shonen Jump on a one-on-one basis, and for putting out the content besides.

The old-school-publisher connection is also of note because through Hachette, Yen had access to a stable of teen-friendly properties for ready adaptation — and some of these books (Maximum Ride) are currently their bestsellers. Yen, to their credit, also reached out to at least one proven OEL manga-ka, Svetlana Chmakova, and her Nightschool series is also an early success for the imprint. OEL is great place to start, actually.

My contempt for Warriors-Cat-Manga is blatant, and not only poorly hidden but oft-stated. However, I’m a Level 14 Bookseller, alignment Neutral Greedy, with the special feat Dissembling About Any Book and so I can often manage to subvert my personal feelings while building on what I know of the book [since I’ve read & reviewed it] & I can sell you Warriors. You might even thank me for it.

In this context, however, we can see that Yen’s Maximum Ride clearly beats Warriors, and Cirque du Freak and Nightschool seem to be ready analogues for HC/T’Pops next two bestsellers, Vampire Kisses and Avalon High.

If anything, I just wish Nightschool was selling better. Any sales are good, and Nightschool isn’t failing by any stretch — but it deserves better.

At first blush, you might think it’s not doing too well, but note some of those volume numbers: 6, 7, 8, 9, 12 — I’m sure Kurt would prefer to have a breakout manhwa title (…and maybe he has one, in Angel Diary) but this is a solid backlist, and the inclusion of manhwa says a lot about Yen as a brand, and as a purveyor of comics.

“Manga” is more than just Cool Japan. Manga is more than ‘manga’ for that matter. It’s about stories, and comics, no matter what the provenance. Yen’s commitment to global manga (both OEL and Manhwa and maybe manhua one of these days?) echoes Tokyopop’s efforts on this front and eventually may beat T’Pop at it’s own marketing game.

Viz has introduced several new brand names recently; there’s the Haikusoru fiction imprint, a new Shonen Sunday jacket dress that shows up to morning roll-call with a massive backlist (Inuyasha, Yakitate, and Case Closed are just for starters) (& definitely see also), the Sig Ikki website that is (I think?) technically just a part of Viz Signature but the publication details are perhaps secondary to the web push.

[and of course Shonen Jump & Shojo Beat, the venerable Ghibli Library, the license-to-print-money VizKids pokemon titles, and an English backlist that goes back to 2001. In some areas, I don’t even know what I’m missing when it comes to Viz, though I do know that someday I will own all of Eagle no matter what it costs.]

Taking in the larger data set, we can see Pluto doing fairly well, actually. For the 8 weeks presented above, volumes 1, 7, and 8 are all solidly represented, with some decent movement on the backlist.

“Yes,” [you might be thinking to yourself,] “but what does a ranking in the 600s or 800s or 1000s even mean? It’s not a top ten, obviously.”

I’ll state it bluntly: if it shows up in my spreadsheet that means books are being sold online – it’s what I set out to track, it’s what I pull up from source charts weekly. So, yeah, #1011 seems like weak sauce; but out of 10,000 available volumes, even #1011 in a ranking means it outsells 90% of all other manga. And we likely only need to sell 5000 manga total [over it’s in-print life] to ‘break even’ — you can do your own math but at $10 a copy and the publishers’ take of 40% that’s $20K to just about cover printing & localization costs (printing @ let’s-call-it-$3-a-book with that leftover $5k for the translator, editorial, my convention travel costs, bar tabs, and legal expenses to defend against sexual harrasment suits) (that is to say, we’re still losing money)

—and I humbly invite correction, if you have actual publishing costs just laying around and cared to share—

But the midlist or slow-moving-backlist is actually a decent place to be for most publishers.

What explains the drop? Well, there is the way the series score is calculated, first:

Previously when figuring out the top 50 series I took the top ranked volume of a given series as a base, then added one tenth of the scores for all remaining volumes in the series. The thinking behind that method was to account for a popular series like Naruto (with 33 ranked books) without creating an unsurmountable barrier to other series that might have one or two equally highly ranked volumes — but only 4-5 volumes total

The trouble with this method is that a highly ranked one-shot (that not-quite-manga vampire/lycanthrope/romance abomination Dark Hunger, for example) is going to beat any number of other, perhaps more qualified series because of its high score and a quirk of the math.

The fix in place this week is to use the combined score of the top two books in a series as the base series score (and then add 1/10 of the rest, as before) which doesn’t change anything really when comparing series (as long as they have at least two books in them) but automatically puts any one-shot or single volume at a disadvantage.

This is, in my opinion, a good thing. And since it’s my chart, that’s what we’re going to see from now on.

So performance of individual volumes can make a big difference, and even with 50+ volumes ranking (though some are way down the list) the primary factor is the relative ranking of the top 2 volumes.

It’s not a complete picture, but let me go through the spreadsheet and break out the rankings of select One Piece books to give you an idea of where it was, where it is, and where the series is going.

Obviously, there is Viz’s speed-up, 5 volumes a month over six months, starting in January [with a new story arc] with volume 24; the last batch (49-53) landed on 1 June. There is the new volume (54) which released 6 July — and also the (rather nice) 3-volume value omnibuses that collected volumes 1-12. Sales of these have been more modest, but still solidly in the midlist; let’s look at not just the first of those, but also volume 13, which will give us an idea of how many folks are ‘graduating’ from the cheap intro to the series into collecting single volumes.

One Piece vol 1 was ranking in the high 200s, the vols.1-3 omnibus in the 300s to 400s, but the speed-up jumping-on point, volume 24—six months after release—is hovering around 200 and the “I just gotta have it” resumption volume after the 4 value collections—vol 13—seems to match the sales of the first omnibus easily, and out-ranking it 4 weeks out of 6.

Since the series ranking is a composite score, even a top 10 single volume might not be enough to vault your favourite into the “top 5”.

But I don’t compile rankings to find a top 10 — OK, fine, I post the top 10 lists because that’s what garners hits and I love my readers; I’d love for there to be more of you — but for me the point of the exercise is the midlist and the long tail.

Starting points, jumping in, new releases, and the 30-volume product dump that was Viz’s ‘speed-up’: Lots and lots of books, and all selling online [I should note here: my rankings are based on online sales, discovered by loading up sites and looking at their ‘bestsellers’; there is no secret knowledge, just publicly available info and a massive investment of time].

“Missing” are volumes 6, 7, 19, & 20 — though these just fall outside my data collection methods, it’s not like no one is buying them.

Your take-away:

• One Piece was a top 5 series, back in June when it had five new volumes and was basking in the tail-end of Viz’s six month long marketing promo. It was in the top 10 right up until last week.
• 54++ volumes still add up: One Piece is a top 25 property and is going to stay there for years to come.
• Fans aren’t obsessively pre-ordering One Piece: they wait for the books to come out. One Piece is popular, but doesn’t have the same hungry fans as say, Hetalia, Berserk, or some of the OEL titles
• You may only read the top 10, but I post a top 500 volumes and top 50 series each week, and I track the weekly movement of 1200+ individual manga.
• I have a lot of data, and a lot of ways to sort the data; I’m just waiting for somebody to pay me for this.
• …but so long as I have to work another job to make the rent, these charts aren’t going to be all they could be. It’s a fun hobby, but ‘hobby’ is where it stays. I’m happy to run a “breakout” chart & analysis like this for one of My Dear Readers, especially one who takes the time to comment [thank you, soysauce] but it takes time.
• you should all be grateful that I like math and have an odd hobby.

Even though the most recent NYT manga bestsellers seem brand new because they posted 3 days ago, in fact their charts as posted are the same vintage as mine, posted yesterday.

Don’t confuse ‘newly posted’ with ‘new’.

Oh, and I’m still waiting for the Times to both name their sources and explain their methods. If you click on those two links you’ll see my posts spelling out my methodology used to develop the charts… but the Times still reports “bestsellers” as Fact when in fact they themselves report the system can be gamed.

“Bestsellers” — For an author and publisher, the New York Times Bestseller imprimatur is money in the bank. They proudly emblazon said status on the cover of the book, and the lucky wordsmith will forever bear the sobrequet of “New York Times Bestselling Author”.

In the publishing world, this is a big deal.

Other papers-of-record (The USA Today list, for example, which is not only longer but more inclusive and — on it’s face, at least — much more democratic) and even major retailers also maintain bestseller lists, but they’ll never be able to conjure the same magic as the New York Times. Something about old New York’s status as a publishing centre, and the 70 years that the NYT has published their charts, are what make their bestsellers ‘the’ bestsellers, but even Wikipedia can point you to older charts, and the controversy surrounding the term, and the different ways the term ‘bestselling’ is used depending on context, region, and even things like the format of the book and the venue in which it is sold.

Hi, my name is Matt. This is RocketBomber.com, and this is where I post a bestseller chart for manga.

I attepted a reckoning of all graphic novels last year (2009) and managed to keep it up for a couple of months, but in order to continue that I’d have to quit my job and do nothing but data entry, number-crunching, and database maintenance for a full 40-50 hours each week.

So I’m going back to my roots [2007] and concentrating on manga, which really helps as it’s a fairly well defined subset of the larger problem, and also full of books I like (which keeps me engaged in an otherwise dull activity)

So what’s manga? Well, “I know it when I see it” and also most online retailers already use the category so with few exceptions, I just click a link. There are some books which many retailers lump in with the manga (and Amazon’s sorting scheme or search hueristics are just plain silly sometimes) so I often skip some books, currently including but not limited to Usagi Yojimbo, Scott Pilgrim, Avatar comics, Twilight comics, and the Odd Thomas graphic novels from Dean Koontz & Queenie Chan — Some of these are great books, just not manga.

The core of the charts is made up of data from three sites: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Borders.

Once a week, I visit each site to check their Graphic Novel categories, and I sort the search results by ‘bestselling’. The links above will pull up exactly that.

I then click through, page after page, and type the titles into a spreadsheet in the order that they are ranked on the sales site. [this is the hard part]

And once I have a full list, I assign points to the books depending on how highly they rank. Add up the points each title earns (and add on similar data from a half-dozen second-tier sales sites) to get a composite score, and there’s your ranking.

Right now I use nine source sites

• Online Bookstores: Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, Borders, Hastings, & Powell’s
• Plus Amazon’s Manga Category Listings & their Manga Hourly Bestsellers
• with some additional input from Buy.com & Deepdiscount.com

The bestsellers from each site are scored, compiled, and ranked in a Top 500, and the data is also used (occasionally with a smidge of extra math) to compile a Top 50 Series chart and rankings for new releases and preorders.
